The Stinkers: The Worst Reality Shows

Ever since “Survivor” took American audiences by storm in 2000, U.S. airwaves have been inundated with reality shows. And many have been horrible, as in the following.

“Are You Hot?: The Search for America’s Sexiest People” was a 2003 ABC reality show in which even the title was degrading. Here, three celebrity judges – Rachel Hunter, Lorenzo Lamas and Randolph Duke – examined the bodies of a parade of contestants, and pointed out their physical flaws in excruciating detail.

The Amazing Race takes eleven teams consisting of two members on a race over thousands of miles and several continents. In each leg of the race, teams must complete challenges that require mental and/or physical skill. When each leg ends, the last team in is usually eliminated. The last three teams complete the race, and the first team in at the completion of the last leg wins one million dollars.

To simply call “The Amazing Race” a reality show is a bit lazy. While it is technically listed as a “reality-competition” show, the fact is that it is so much more. It is a travel show that goes to the remote corners of the planet to show different people and cultures; it’s a dramatic shows that gives you people that you actually end up caring about whether they win and lose; and most of all, it is an action show that gets you sucked in the first minute you watch it. If you have never heard of the show “Cops” you have probably not watched much television in your lifetime. With that said, the show came out in the 1990s as a show where camera crews tagged along with on duty policy officers and filmed their day to day encounters, many of which were quite entertaining.
